Dr. Liu's research aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that link overnutrition, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and metabolic/ inflammatory disorders. Employing animal models, his team attempts to dissect the physiological actions of the IRE1α arm of the unfolded protein response (UPR) in nutrient-sensing, metabolic control, and immune homeostasis. Their studies will provide new insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying obesity, type 2 diabetes, NASH, and other aging-related chronic inflammatory diseases.
