Brehm Tower Celebrates 12th Anniversary

Wednesday, November 23, 2022
Brehm Tower at night

On Thursday, November 17 the Brehm Center, together with the Caswell Diabetes Institute, hosted a celebration to honor the 12th anniversary of the Brehm Tower and the pioneering scientific innovations occurring within the Brehm Center for Diabetes Research. Located next to the Kellogg Eye Center, the Brehm Tower is a direct result of the kindness and generosity of Bill and Delores (Dee) Brehm who graciously gifted $44 million to the University of Michigan for type 1 diabetes research in 2004.

The well-attended event opened with several rousing selections from the UM Men’s Glee Club- a nod to Mr. Brehm and his appreciation for the collegial choir. Afterward, Martin Myers, MD, Director of CDI, welcomed those in attendance and shared insight on the tower, setting the stage for impressive presentations on insulin biosynthesis, type 1 diabetes and increased cardiovascular disease, insulin producing pancreatic beta cells as well as diabetes retinal diseases from four of our top lead investigators in diabetes research.

In addition to highlighting the life-changing research occurring within the Brehm Center, this catered event was also an opportunity to recognize the commitment and dedication of the faculty, researchers and staff who make it all possible.

To view the compelling scientific presentations as well as glean endearing insight on the Brehm family and what their contributions have meant to this work, we invite you to click on the link to the video from the event.
