This summer, CDI faculty member Dr. Ormond MacDougald (OAC '86) returned to the University of Guelph for two well-deserved honors: an honorary Doctor of Science degree and delivering the 2025 convocation address.

Dr. MacDougald, the John A Faulkner Collegiate Professor of Physiology, professor of molecular & integrative physiology and internal medicine, received the honorary degree for not only his groundbreaking research, but also for his mentorship and dedication to the next generation of scientists. MacDougald was one of eight honorees recognized at the June ceremony.

During his warm and humorous speech, the rural Ontario native reflected on his journey from farm life to biomedical research. Crediting his undergraduate years at Guelph and the mentorship he received for shaping his path, he encouraged graduates to seek mentors, persevere through setbacks, and move forward with authenticity and self-assurance. His message celebrated the lasting value of a Guelph education while emphasizing humility, adaptability, and staying grounded in one's roots.

Lastly, MacDougald shared fond memories of his time on campus, including that one early morning when he decided to serenade Maids Hall (an on-campus residence hall) with his bagpipes!
