CDI faculty member, Dr. Gretchen Piatt was recently appointed chair of the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Piatt is a professor of learning health sciences in the medical school and a professor of health behavior and health equity in the School of Public Health. She also currently serves as the co-director for one of CDI’s partner centers, the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (MCDTR).

Dr. Piatt earned her PhD and Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. She joined the University of Michigan as an assistant professor in 2011, earning the title of professor in 2023.

Dr. Piatt is nationally and internationally recognized for her research on diabetes health equity and as an Implementation Scientist focused on implementing evidence-based solutions into practice and policy. The underlying theme of her academic career is to improve health equity for people with diabetes, particularly in minority populations, by improving prevention and treatment efforts in health system and community settings, using multi-modal, transdisciplinary research methods.

Dr. Piatt has a strong teaching record and is committed to training a new generation of research scientists. She advises and mentors graduate students, medical students, and early-career faculty members. In 2023, she was recognized as a distinguished clinical and translational research mentor by MICHR.

In addition to research and mentorship, Dr. Piatt has served on institutional, national, and international diabetes committees, including serving as the Course Director for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Advanced Post Graduate Course, a member of the ADA Scientific Sessions Planning Committee, the ADA Nationwide Grant Review committee, an International Diabetes Federation grant review committee, and as the President of the Behavioral Research in Diabetes Group Exchange.

Congratulations, Dr. Piatt, on your new role in academic leadership here at the university.
