The JDRF One Walk was held on a beautiful fall morning, Sunday, October 2, 2022. Despite the crisp morning air, there were more than 600 participants at the walk. People enjoyed visiting the vendor tents and networking before the walk began. Several pediatric patients visited the U of M tent hoping to see their physicians at the walk, and to share their stories with us. Hearing these little ones talk about finding out they had type 1 diabetes and hearing about their struggles the families encounter reminded us of why we were there – to help find a cure so that others don’t have to experience these hardships!
There were brief opening remarks and a special dance routine performed by young students from a local studio to kick things off. It was exciting to watch the long line of walkers with their colorful shirts and costumes start the walk. It was quite a sight to see! As the teams returned, they were welcomed by princesses and superheroes, enthusiastic members of the EMU men’s and women’s track teams, and the JDRF staff. There were impromptu conversations at the finish line asking folks who they were walking for or why they walked and what groups they were with. Overall, it was a very successful day! The MM Caswell Diabetes Institute team, along with all of our other MM teams: Pharmacy, MEND, Dentistry, COO and Pediatrics, as well as our corporate sponsorship from Michigan Medicine and CS Mott, raised more than $14,000. Thank you to all our participants, team captains, Michigan Medicine and CS Mott for your support!
