Research

Dr. Horowitz's primary research focus is on the effects of exercise and diet on the regulation of lipid metabolism, insulin resistance and other obesity-related cardio-metabolic abnormalities in human subjects. His laboratory studies whole-body and regional fatty acid and glucose metabolism in human subjects using stable-isotope tracers, microdialysis, and indirect calorimetry. In addition, his lab also examines cellular regulation of substrate metabolism, insulin signaling, adipogenesis, and inflammatory pathway activation in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue. This integrated approach makes it possible to identify cellular adaptations to exercise and/or different diets that may underlie important clinical outcomes. Dr. Horowitz is also the Director of the “Nutrition, Exercise, and phenotype Testing (NExT)” core for the University of Michigan’s NIH-funded “Nutrition and Obesity Research Center” (MNORC). In his role as Core Director, he assists university researchers with their obesity-related research projects by helping to conduct and/or coordinate a wide range of metabolic and phenotypic assessments.
