Steven Soliman

Clinical Associate Professor
ssoliman@umich.edu

Biography

Dr. Steven Soliman is an associate professor and a board-certified, fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologist at the University of Michigan/Michigan Medicine. He serves as the Program Director of the MSK Radiology Fellowship, Program Associate – Clinical Research Lead for MSK Radiology, and the Director of MSK Ultrasound. His areas of expertise include musculoskeletal radiology, musculoskeletal ultrasound, MRI, sports injuries, diabetes-related musculoskeletal complications, foot and ankle imaging/posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, peripheral nerve imaging, artificial intelligence/machine learning, arthritis, and minimally invasive ultrasound-guided pain procedures and biopsies.

Dr. Soliman is actively involved in clinical research, including NIH-funded research studies and clinical trials. His research focuses on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and MRI, Musculoskeletal Complications in Diabetes and Obesity, Progressive Collapsing Foot Deformity/Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction/Adult Acquired Flat Foot Deformity, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Histotripsy/Sarcomas, and Sports Injuries.

He is particularly interested in the early detection of obesity- and diabetes-related MSK complications using ultrasound. His research aims to elucidate the mechanism and impact of increased skeletal muscle echo intensity (hyperechoic) in the development of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Soliman's team is pioneering the use of artificial intelligence/machine learning to analyze skeletal muscle as a noninvasive biomarker, an innovative approach designed to identify type 2 diabetes and detect lower muscle mass before the onset of clinically apparent metabolic dysfunction.
